A story in the NY Times says "Americans training the new Iraqi Army believe it could be several years before the Iraqi forces will be ready to stand alone against the insurgents." This implies two facts. One, that American military forces will be in Iraq for years, and so will the 'insurgency".
And dont forget that 1700 american servicemen and women have died now.
When you add in the fact that "seventy-three percent of americans say the military casualties in Iraq have become unacceptable", you'll know why "the Army reported on Friday that it had fallen short of its recruitment goals for a fourth consecutive month".
It is not hard to understand why "58 percent of the poll's respondents now disapprove of the way Bush is handling both the economy and the situation in Iraq. The same number now believe that, weighing the costs and the benefits to the United States, the war was not worth fighting."
A clear majority of americans oppose Mr Bush's policies. If Mr Bush had been honest up to this point, he may have been able to raise his approval rating with a little bit of 'public relations'. Unfortunately for Mr Bush, his barrage of spin and propaganda has ruined his credibility. It is only downhill from here on out for Mr Bush.
American's know it was all a lie. Politics and politicians follow american opinion. It can be a slow process, but it has started. Only time will tell how far Mr Bush will fall.
