:: Is This What A Civilized Country Does? 9:18 AM

So, the dirty little secret is out. The American Military does torture the people it captures. Both soldiers and civilians.

It isn't a few bad apples. Its how the system works. Everyone knew it was going on. Nobody thought it was wrong. They made digital copies of the photographs and passed them around on cd's. The Washington Post managed to get one of those CD's.

If this was a civilized country. There would be calls for everyone to resign, and the troops in question would be turned over to the War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague. But not here. In America, it doesn't matter. Everyone in power will keep their power.

President Bush basically went on Arab television and said "Americans are good people".

He just doesn't get it.

This is what America does. American soldiers torture prisoners. It's a fact. It always has been a fact, and it always will be a fact. Nobody in my neighborhood is talking about it, nobody at work is taking about it. We already know. This is what America does.

America kills prisoners. Its a fact. It happens here in Connecticut. It happened in Texas while George Bush was Governor. George Bush personally signed over 500 Death Warrants in Texas.

"They were bad people"

Granted. Some of them were. But in America, it's not enough to catch them and lock them up. Americans need to torture, humiliate, and kill its prisoners too. This is how Americans treat other Americans. Why is anyone surprised by the brutality of the US Prison guards who were shipped to Iraq to run the Iraqi prison?

And it's not just prisoners. It is everyone who doesn't have insurance. Everyone who lives is squalor in slums.

America is sick. The disease is everywhere. In the schools, the entertainment and the politicians. The disease is destroying the heart of America, maybe it is already too late for a cure.

The disease took hold in the 60's when America went to war in Vietnam. Humanity, in the form of North Vietnam became expendable, America condoned the barbaric use of horrific weapons against an agricultural nation. North Vietnam was never a threat.

America managed to convince itself otherwise. We heard about the domino theory, the communists, and the bomb. We went to war. Millions of people died. And we left. It didn't matter. Vietnam was never a threat.

In the 70's, America got sick of being sick. A president was thrown out of office, a genuine "nice guy" was put in power, and America slept.

But the disease did not sleep. The disease consolidated its power, made deals with foreign countries. If they would continue to hold the Americans hostage, the disease could regain power, and it happened. The disease won, and Reagan was installed. Everyone who saw him, knew he was just a face, the assuring face of and actor obscured the face of a hideous disease. Reagan told America what it wanted to hear.

The Reagan administration waged war in central America, ran drugs and guns to terrorists in exchange for a consolidation of power. Democracies fell and were replaced by WTO sanctioned economic regimes. The American for were vilified and the social aspect of America suffered a crushing blow under the guise of welfare reform. No longer did America care for its own, no longer did America care for others, their opinions were dismissed, the economic fascist state is the face of the disease.

The disease is hatred, lies, deceit, corruption and indifference. Americans don't know or care what the American government does to other countries, people or societies. But those victims don't forget any quicker than America has forgotten the World Trade Center bombing. But how much worse has America done to Iraq, El Salvador, Nicaragua? Does anyone in America care?

The disease at the core of America is greed. American pension plans have been replaced by 401k plans. Everyone in America feeds from trickle down effect of the stock market and is dependent upon it, and yet the stock market is fatal to them. How much harm has NAFTA done to both America and the world? How many Americans have lost jobs to foreign labor? Your 401k plan kills other Americans. Each time the corporation needs to show a profit, globalization gets stronger, American citizens become weaker, and the 401k is preserved. Fewer people receive benefits.

The disease is indifference. It watches when people are beaten and robbed in the street and nobody intervenes. It watches as Americans lose their jobs, their health care, and their future. It watches as American soldiers take tourist photographs of Iraqi prisoners, stripped naked, hooded, bound, sodomized, and piled up like wood on the floor. And nobody cares.

The disease threatens America and America reacts. America feeds the disease, trusts the disease of anger and revenge. Adds power to the powerful, buy's weapons for the soldiers, as its soldiers create more enemies. The need for more soldiers increases. The injustice increases, the killing increases, and the hatred of America increases.

The disease destroys American air, water, forests and lakes. It fills America with poison. It fills America with the need to destroy itself. You know it. You heard it today. "America must compete, regulation destroys business, Tax cut, tax cut, tax cut, Be afraid of the reformer, he will take away your guns, he will destroy America's power.

And the disease feeds upon the American soul, consumed by fear, lashing out in vengeance against monsters of its own creation. The lies get bigger, the fear destroys the victim.

Is this civilization? I don't think so. Technology is not the same as civilization. A civilized country treats its citizens well and cares for the citizens.

America is not civilized. It is a barbarian country. Wholly lacking in compassion and morality. And its everywhere. It's in the army, its in the corporations and stock market, its in the TV shows and movies, its in the streets and schools.
